When you’re looking for a dog daycare, one of the biggest questions on your mind is probably: How are dogs supervised, and what is the staff-to-dog ratio? It’s a fair question, especially here in British Columbia, where there are no mandatory government certifications for dog daycares. That means you want to be sure your furry friend is safe, happy, and well cared for.

I get it. You want to know who’s watching your dog, how they’re grouped, and what happens if things get a little rough. Let’s dive into these questions and share how Doggy Doolil Daycare in Surrey, BC, handles all this with care, trust, and a bit of doggy family magic.

How Dogs Are Supervised and how no Staff-to-Dog Ratios at Doggy Doolil Daycare really works

Supervision is the heart of any good dog daycare. At Doggy Doolil, we don’t just throw dogs into a room and hope for the best. As pack leaders we are trained to watch every sound, wag, sniff, and tail wag carefully. We keep a close eye on how dogs interact, stepping in calmly and assertively when needed.

Our staff-to-dog ratio is different from other daycares. Instead of having one staff member for every 6-10 dogs or more, we manage our pack with one pack leader and a few four-legged helpers. This approach reduces conflicts among dogs, eliminates fighting, ensures faster responses to any disputes, and offers a more personal experience.

And it only works because we operate with a membership of regularly attending dogs, not strange dogs all the time, in a high anxiety environment. When we enforce time-outs for behaviours like not sharing or being destructive, it not only disciplines the specific dog but also teaches the entire pack by example what behaviours are unacceptable.

That doesn't mean its just a free-for-all. We have a structured day of events and a 2 hour nap time mid day. Free play in the afternoon during pickup time a mix of play or just chilaxin on a couch or chewing on a nyla bone. What ever tickles your tummy! That also means dogs get to enjoy their time together but within a safe, guided environment. Our pack leader is trained to read dog body language and step in before play gets too rough or stressful.

How Dogs Are Not Sorted and Grouped

You might wonder if your small dog will be safe around big dogs or if energetic pups get separated from the chill ones. At Doggy Doolil, we do things a little differently. We don’t separate dogs by size or energy level. I mean, your little dog is more unsafe around you as they would be around dogs weighing max 70 lbs. The chances of you rolling over on them is just as possible as one of the pack dogs doing in, and it never happens here because little ones let the bigger ones know to watch out, and they do! And when the Zoomies come on, the little's either join in, or get to a safe space. They do have good common sense after all.

Our pack co-mingles, learning each other’s play styles. Some shy dog would never get to experience a good wrestle if it wasn't for the playful buddy nose poking him to come play. that's how the dog gains confidence and friends. Most daycare's would just stick him in a segregated area thinking its the safest place for him, all while he watches all the fun go on on the other side of the fence, wishing he had the courage to join in.

Dogs inherently know what they all need. We need to stop thinking we know it all and start watching and learning from them instead. This knowledge is what Mimi gained by watching a pack of member dogs upwards to 30 dogs a day by herself, over the last 20+ years. This approach helps shy dogs get over their fear of bigger dogs, or just dogs in general, and the smaller dogs learn how to be dogs, not just accessories. It’s a bit like a family where everyone has a role and a place to fit in. And not one small dog was hurt in the last 20+ years from hanging out with a fun pack of dogs.

Within our pack, there’s a natural ranking system — top, middle, and bottom. For example, Mimi is our top dog, and she has a few buddies who help her keep the peace. They use calm but firm ways to teach manners and boundaries, much like a mother dog does with her puppies.

This leadership creates a safe, trusting environment where dogs feel included and free to be themselves. They don’t feel bored or stuck in a corner where they don’t want to be. Instead, they get to play, nap together in a dog pile, and share toys and bones.

Vaccination and Health Requirements

Safety starts before your dog even steps through our door. We require all dogs to be up to date on their vaccinations, including Rabies, Distemper, and Bordetella. These are standard vaccines that protect your dog and others from common illnesses.

We have 3 water station with one being a fountain. We refresh the stainless steel buckets regularly to maintain fresh clean water. We avoid harsh chemicals and rinse with water frequently. Our Pet Pro Turf is great too, because you won't have a muddle buddy going home every day, so the place is clean and the dog is ready for the couch. I mean, you can't wash off the dog smell because they come that way. Monthly baths are recommended because removing their oil from the skin can cause many skin issues. Rinsing them off daily is fine, of course.

Handling Incidents, Bullying, and Dog Fights

No matter how well dogs get along, sometimes things happen. Maybe a dog feels overwhelmed or a misunderstanding sparks a scuffle. At Doggy Doolil, we handle incidents quickly and calmly.

Our staff is trained to spot early signs of bullying or tension. We step in before things escalate, using calm, assertive corrections. If a dog fight does happen, we separate the dogs safely and assess the situation. We then work with the dog owners to prevent future issues. It's a skill to recognize the trigger in dogs and Mimi sees it coming a mile away. Most dogs that are turned away from other daycare that are lucky enough to find Mimi, have been amazed and surprised how well their dog does in her pack. We are a team. And knowing how to read and assess not only the dog but the owners, and what skills they bring to the table will tell Mimi exactly what to expect from the dog.

We believe no dog wants to hurt another. Even the toughest dogs just want to feel safe and respected. That’s why we vet every dog thoroughly before they join the pack. Trust is key — we trust the dogs, and they trust us. We do have breed restrictions, however. We use common sense in knowing what breeds should be avoided in most daycare settings. And in our daycare we don't allow any bully breed, like pit bulls, American Staffies, Rottweilers, Dobermans, Akita's, Huskies, Shar Pei's, and since just recently, any dog over 75 lbs.

Are Webcams Available to Watch My Dog?

We know how much you want to check in on your dog during the day. While Doggy Doolil doesn’t currently offer webcams, as we operate out of our home, we encourage you to visit anytime by booking a tour. We’re happy to give tours and show you how your dog spends their day. You can even look over the gate or through our little bubble windows from the intake area, to see the dogs in action. And we do post pics and videos on social media as often as possible.

The BC SPCA advises that a reputable daycare should allow you to view their facilities and handling techniques. We concur — transparency fosters trust. During your visit, you'll observe our open-concept daycare where dogs can play, rest, and socialize freely under careful supervision. With prior notice, you can also enter the cottage to see where we let the dogs nap during extremely hot or cold days.

Why Our Pack Approach Works

At Doggy Doolil, we think of our daycare as a family pack. Dogs learn from each other, build friendships, and find their place in the group. This natural socialization helps them become calm, confident dogs.

Good leadership in the pack means dogs feel safe and free to be themselves. They don’t feel segregated or bored. Instead, they get to enjoy the company of friends, share toys, and even pile up for nap time.

This approach is different from many daycare's that separate dogs by size or energy. We believe trust comes first, then gentle correction and guidance. It’s a joyful, thankful environment where dogs feel included and loved.
