Here Mimi shares an example; a dog won't share the toys. He will get a max 5 minutes for each time the dog does this behaviour. 3 time-outs is the average amount of times a dog will need to stop this behaviour. I even dole out treats during this time so they feel like they really missed out on something. This might seem cruel to some, but what I think is cruel, is ending his daycare, he loses all his friends and is now seen as a mean and difficult dog. That's cruel.

If done with calm assertive energy, with consistency, and repeated in the same session, or within the next few days, the dog will recognize the pattern, and the behaviour will stop. Now sharing is a thing! The dog is choosing to stop the behaviour, knowing the consequence is just not worth the risk.

Rehabilitated behaviour. Operant conditioning. Positive Punishment. Old school training. Not using aversive tools, bullying or abusive methods, but highly effective and fast learning, without treats, bribes and struggles.

Anyone can use this technique, and if you do try this, you can't waiver. You must follow through each time, and if you do that, and keep calm, use as few words as possible, except for saying the words 'time-out'.

While I watch their behaviour following a time-out, I might catch the dog attempting to repeat the behaviour, so I will 'tss' the dog for attention, and look seriously at the dog and say "you want another time out? This must be delivered slow and low in energy, so it slows their mind down enough for them to think.

Given a chance to reconsider their choices, most dogs will choose to do something else. We want them to choose to be good, not be forced. And just like in our real life, we also have to choose to be good. We know what drinking and driving will do, so choosing not to do it is the best option, no? That's a choice!
